More about Newcastle upon Tyne
To give it its full name, Newcastle upon Tyne is a city with a rich, layered history that dates back nearly 2,000 years. Its earliest roots can be traced to AD 122, when the Romans established a fort and bridge called Pons Aelius along the River Tyne.
Centuries later, in 1080, William the Conqueror’s eldest son, Robert Curthose, built a wooden motte-and-bailey-style castle on the fort site, giving the city its name as “the new castle upon Tyne”. The wooden construction was replaced over time with a stone one, and it still stands today in the heart of the city.
The Tyne Bridge is one of the most recognisable landmarks of the city, linking the city to nearby Gateshead, while Newcastle Cathedral remains a shining example of Gothic architecture. Originally founded in 1091, it was rebuilt in the 14th and 15th centuries, and its distinctive lantern tower once served as a navigational guide for ships on the River Tyne.
The city is home to world-class attractions, including the Great North Museum: Hancock, which offers a range of workshops and exhibitions, as well as plenty of interactive experiences for younger visitors.
The Discovery Museum celebrates Newcastle’s successes in science, industry and innovation, while the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art has four floors of cutting-edge art, and the Glasshouse International Centre for Music showcases incredible live music.
The Life Science Centre is also a must-visit for curious children and families, featuring a wide range of interactive exhibits and the North’s largest planetarium.
The Quayside is the perfect place to enjoy strolls along the water or enjoy a bike ride, and when the day turns to night, it’s also home to a generous array of bars and clubs.
Sport is also at the heart of the city, with Newcastle United's pitch at St. James' Park remaining one of the oldest and largest football stadiums in the UK.
Just a short journey from the city lies the coast, where Tynemouth and its surrounding beaches offer a calming contrast with golden sands and gentle waves.
And if you're looking for pubs in Newcastle or nearby, you're overloaded with options.
