More about Liverpool
Liverpool's history stretches back to 1190, when it was first recorded as 'Liuerpul', a name thought to mean 'muddy creek' or 'muddy pool'. By 1207, King John had granted it borough status, creating a small settlement of just seven streets laid out in the shape of an 'H'.
The city went on to play a pivotal role in maritime trade and, in 1715, became home to the world's first enclosed commercial wet dock, known as the Old Dock. By the time Liverpool gained city status in 1880, it had established itself as one of Britain's most important ports.
Today, traces of this rich heritage can be found throughout the city, from the historic waterfront and docklands, which are now home to museums, restaurants and pubs, to the Tudor splendour of Speke Hall and the neoclassical beauty of St George’s Hall.
No visit to Liverpool's waterfront is complete without seeing the Three Graces, the city's most iconic architectural trio. Built during Liverpool's maritime golden age, the Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building stand side by side overlooking the River Mersey, symbolising the city's heritage and enduring connection to the sea.
Dale Street is renowned for its impressive Victorian architecture and central location, yet its history stretches back much further as one of Liverpool's original seven streets, established by King John.
For sports fans, Liverpool is home to both Liverpool FC and Everton FC, as well as Aintree Racecourse, the birthplace of the Grand National. Plus, the city has produced an extraordinary range of creative talent, from musical icons such as The Beatles and Cilla Black to actors including David Morrissey and Jodie Comer.
For some coastal charm, you can also escape the hustle and bustle for Formby Beach, which is known for its striking views of the Irish Sea and sweeping sand dunes... And let's not forget the generous mix of pubs. Whether you need something in the city centre or close to the area, there's plenty on offer.
