But it all starts with the beer, brewed at our iconic brewery. They say home is where the heart is, and for us, that heart is firmly in our Westgate Brewery.
Greene King's Westgate Brewery: Steeped in 200 years of history
Greene King has a proud brewing history that began at the Westgate Brewery in Bury St Edmunds over 200 years ago. There’s actually been a brewery on the site since 1700 and brewing in the town can be traced back as far as the days of the Domesday book in 1086.
Defying gravity
Built in 1938, our gravity-fed brewhouse delivered exceptional results from the get-go, and our beer is still brewed in the same building today using much of the same equipment. If it isn’t broken, why fix it?
Our beers are brewed using gravity to pass the ingredients from one floor to the next, and we rely on natural ingredients and traditional methods. In fact, we still draw our water from the same chalk wells beneath the brewery that were used by the Benedictine monks of St Edmund. A proud tradition kept alive.
We opened a microbrewery in Bury St Edmunds back in November 2013, and the St Edmund Innovation Brewery is used to brew a delicious range of craft beers, as well as allowing us to experiment with bold and innovative new flavours.

Our pubs offer a wide selection of drinks, but we’re especially proud of our Greene King beers, all brewed at the Westgate Brewery, and available at our pubs up and down the country.

We’re proud to work with an expert team of brewers who not only know their craft inside out, but genuinely love it.
Our brewery runs 24 hours a day, with our team ensuring everything runs smoothly around the clock.
From extracting the liquor and pumping it to the top of the brewhouse, to mashing, fermenting, and packaging, everyone plays a vital role. Together, they make sure every sip is special so we can continue to deliver the same great taste and quality to our customers.
