Nick Mackenzie to step down as Chief Executive Officer as part of planned succession process

Greene King, the UK’s leading pub company and brewer, today announces that Nick Mackenzie will step down as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the end of February 2027 as part of a planned succession process. At which time, Nick will be succeeded by Clair Preston-Beer, who is currently Chief Digital and Commercial Officer.

Nick has led Greene King for nearly eight years and has decided now is the right time to step down having launched the business’s bold 2030 strategy including new plans for the pub estate and brewery. Nick will remain on the Board of Greene King ltd to support the transition.

Nick has overseen a transformational period for Greene King including taking the business private in the acquisition by CK Assets in 2019, embedding a new strategy alongside a culture change programme, as well as delivering significant investment to position the business as a modern integrated pub company and brewer set up for long-term future success.

Investment highlights include the business’s market-leading digital programme, the launch of the new state-of-the-art brewery build in Bury St Edmunds, and the successful investment in and roll-out of Hickory’s. During his time at Greene King, Nick has also been a passionate advocate of the pub and brewing industry and a champion for inclusion and social mobility.

As part of Greene King’s long-term succession planning process, Clair Preston-Beer will succeed Nick in March 2027 and become Greene King’s first female CEO in its 227-year history. Clair joined Greene King in 2020 as Managing Director of Greene King pubs before being appointed to Chief Operating Officer in 2024 and Chief Digital and Commercial Officer in 2026. Over this time, she has overseen all commercial, digital and technology functions for the group. During the past six years, Clair has been instrumental in shaping the company’s new strategy and implementing operational change across the business including its digital transformation and development of Greene King’s loyalty programme.

Clair has over 27 years’ experience in operational and commercial roles across retail and leisure, having joined Greene King from Whitbread, where she spent over 16 years building and operating the Costa Coffee brand, latterly as Managing Director for the Middle East & Asia. Clair has vast experience in growing and transforming businesses at scale, she also sits on the board of the British Beer and Pub Association and has held various roles as a FTSE-350 Non-Executive Director.

Greene King is well-positioned with a clear strategy in place to deliver sustainable profitable growth for the long-term. A detailed handover of responsibilities will commence shortly to ensure a smooth transition.
